The History

Since its creation in England in the early 1800s by Anna, Duchess of Bedford, Afternoon Tea has long been associated with the entertainment of society. In the late 19th century, it was Caroline Astor, mother of the St. Regis founder John Jacob Astor IV, who elevated Afternoon Tea to a new level by introducing the ritual at dignified gatherings at her house in Manhattan.


Today, this ritual comes alive every afternoon at every St. Regis around the globe, where guests are invited to enjoy distinct interpretations of this legacy inspired by the respective traditions of each location. From the moment we walked in the door, the staff made us feel welcomed and valued SPG members. We received a complimentary upgrade based on my Gold status (even though I had booked the room with points, which I've read other users say is looked down on at other SPG luxury properties). That wasn't the case with this hotel. The room was very large and well appointed. It had clearly been updated in recent years. The staff to guest ratio at this hotel was insane! It felt like there were 2 staff members to every guest. I know that's not the actual ratio, but that's how attentive the staff was at any moment. Our room upgrade came with butler service and our butler team was wonderful. The only small thing was that the air conditioning didn't get as frigid as I would have liked - but it was still the coldest hotel (or other building) we experienced in our 13 days in Europe. I think Americans just are used to keeping the air unreasonably Arctic cold. We received complimentary drinks at the bar, which we used on our last night there. I regrettably don't recall our server's name because I would have liked to give him kudos here. I ordered a gin and tonic for my husband while he was making a phone call and because I didn't know which kind of gin to specify - our waiter made it into a full on gin tasting for him. He was thrilled. It was little touches like this throughout our staff that made it so memorable. Additionally, the hotel's location was great. It was not in the thick of all the tourist madness, but it was a very short walk to everything and had a great view of the river. We drove in from Rome and the rental car return was just a block away. The train station was a 7 minute walk when we went to depart. Overall, I highly recommend!
